Hopefully Brockman can school The Guru too
Some people have all the luck. Well sort of…

Deuce’s Brockman was lucky enough to be one of the first people to respond to an invitation to Guru subscribers to join a league with none other than The Guru himself, John Hansen, BUT proceeded to draft THE WORST team you have ever seen.

Meanwhile Hansen’s first three picks will look very familiar to many.

From “BrockmanBlitz”.

I am glad he did not analyze my picks. I knew drinking before and during was a bad idea. I still cannot believe I took Andre Johnson over Larry Fitz.

Not to mention Jamaal Charles over Doug Martin… And Guru did call out Brockman for his round ten pick. BAAAHHH!!

Analysis of the draft From The Guru himself.

10-Team NFFC Cutline Championship Draft Recap

by John Hansen, Publisher

Published, 8/17/13

I participated on Thursday night in a 26-round, 10-team draft for the NFFC Cutline Championship. This was against all FantasyGuru.com subscribers, so it’s not an easy field for me. Not only do these people get all of our information, but they also know exactly what my Draft Plan is. Of course, that plan is flexible, and I didn’t feel like I got hosed on as many picks as I did last year, when I did something similar with the NFFC and drafting against subscribers.

This league is unique in that it’s very deep rosters (10 teams, 260 players drafted) and you’re only allowed three Waiver Wire moves all year. So I was a little more focused on durability and handcuffing my top players. I was also looking a little harder for viable stash-and-hope picks.

This is a PPR league with all TDs worth 6 points. Otherwise, the scoring is pretty standard.

I unfortunately don’t have the time to cover every pick, as I’m working on so many other things that are higher priorities, but I took some time to roll through this draft and offer some thoughts.

ROUND PICK PLAYER POS TEAM

1 1 Adrian Peterson RB Team paul

1 2 Jamaal Charles RB BrockmanBlitz

1 3 Doug Martin RB Sledgehammer

1 4 Calvin Johnson WR San Carlos 4

1 5 C.J. Spiller RB The Maestro

1 6 Arian Foster RB Felonious Assault 1

1 7 Ray Rice RB SlickRick23

1 8 Trent Richardson RB Guru’s Guru

1 9 Marshawn Lynch RB BobbyG

1 10 LeSean McCoy RB Team Hansen

Comments: Felt fortunate to get McCoy at #10. This was done right when his second preseason game kicked off, and he probably would have gone higher after his stellar showing. Arian Foster at #6 was a value.

2 1 A.J. Green WR Team Hansen

2 2 Dez Bryant WR BobbyG

2 3 Matt Forte RB Guru’s Guru

2 4 Brandon Marshall WR SlickRick23

2 5 Jimmy Graham TE Felonious Assault 1

2 6 Demaryius Thomas WR The Maestro

2 7 Julio Jones WR San Carlos 4

2 8 Randall Cobb WR Sledgehammer

2 9 Aaron Rodgers QB BrockmanBlitz

2 10 Victor Cruz WR Team paul

Comments: Tough call here, but in a 10-team league and with 20 picks before my next pick, I felt the need to secure a stud WR. RB is pretty deep this year, so I felt the next to get one top wideout.

3 1 Alfred Morris RB Team paul

3 2 Andre Johnson WR BrockmanBlitz

3 3 Larry Fitzgerald WR Sledgehammer

3 4 Steven Jackson RB San Carlos 4

3 5 Maurice Jones-Drew RB The Maestro

3 6 Reggie Bush RB Felonious Assault 1

3 7 Chris Johnson RB SlickRick23

3 8 Darren Sproles RB Guru’s Guru

3 9 Stevan Ridley RB BobbyG

3 10 Drew Brees QB Team Hansen

Comments: I do want to hold off on a QB, but with 6 points for all TDs and my #1 QB on the board with what can also be considered the 4th round, you kind of have to pull the trigger, especially in this format with Brees so durable. There were a lot of good values in this round, including Reggie Bush, Stevan Jackson, and Alfred Morris.

4 1 Frank Gore RB Team Hansen

4 2 Peyton Manning QB BobbyG

4 3 Roddy White WR Guru’s Guru

4 4 Dwayne Bowe WR SlickRick23

4 5 Wes Welker WR Felonious Assault 1

4 6 Cam Newton QB The Maestro

4 7 Le’Veon Bell RB San Carlos 4

4 8 Jason Witten TE Sledgehammer

4 9 Vincent Jackson WR BrockmanBlitz

4 10 Danny Amendola WR Team paul

Comments: I needed another RB, and it was a little early for some of the younger guys like Le’Veon Bell and Lamar Miller, so I just took a reliable guy in Gore, who popped off a 50+ yard run last night. It wasn’t easy to pass on some of the other appealing options, but I need availability. But Gore looks appealing this year, given their receiver issues.

5 1 Darren McFadden RB Team paul

5 2 DeMarco Murray RB BrockmanBlitz

5 3 David Wilson RB Sledgehammer

5 4 Lamar Miller RB San Carlos 4

5 5 Rob Gronkowski TE The Maestro

5 6 Marques Colston WR Felonious Assault 1

5 7 Shane Vereen RB SlickRick23

5 8 Pierre Garcon WR Guru’s Guru

5 9 Reggie Wayne WR BobbyG

5 10 Antonio Brown WR Team Hansen

Comments: Here’s where I got pinched at WR, as I was hoping my guy Pierre Garcon, or at least Reggie Wayne. I had to “settle” on Brown, whom I do still love. That was pretty nice value for Lamar Miller in the 5th round. That’s a great spot for him.

6 1 Daryl Richardson RB Team Hansen

6 2 Eddie Lacy RB BobbyG

6 3 T.Y. Hilton WR Guru’s Guru

6 4 Ryan Mathews RB SlickRick23

6 5 Montee Ball RB Felonious Assault 1

6 6 Steve Smith WR The Maestro

6 7 Vernon Davis TE San Carlos 4

6 8 Ahmad Bradshaw RB Sledgehammer

6 9 DeSean Jackson WR BrockmanBlitz

6 10 Stevie Johnson WR Team paul

Comments: Knowing I’m going up against subscribers, I realize I’m not going to get many great values, and I needed a RB. Especially since I’m not picking again for essentially two rounds, I had to get one. Ahmad Bradshaw and Eddie Lacy were very tempting, but Bradshaw’s age concerned me, and I do still have some concerns about how reliable Lacy will be this year (although I do think he has a very good chance to be very productive). I went with Richardson, who I think will have clear value all year, and who also has some upside. For most, he should be drafted 1-2 rounds later for better value.

7 1 Tavon Austin WR Team paul

7 2 Tony Gonzalez TE BrockmanBlitz

7 3 Giovani Bernard RB Sledgehammer

7 4 Andrew Luck QB San Carlos 4

7 5 Chris Givens WR The Maestro

7 6 Ben Tate RB Felonious Assault 1

7 7 Eric Decker WR SlickRick23

7 8 Matthew Stafford QB Guru’s Guru

7 9 James Jones WR BobbyG

7 10 Hakeem Nicks WR Team Hansen

Comments: I’m fairly thin at WR, so I could not pass on a possible value in Nicks. Yes, he has injury issues, but if he can stay on the field, this will be a great value. He’s a high-end player in a contract year, so I felt he was worth this risk. It would have been nice to get Reuben Randle, but that was not in the cards. This was too early for Tate.

8 1 DeAngelo Williams RB Team Hansen

8 2 Mark Ingram RB BobbyG

8 3 Anquan Boldin WR Guru’s Guru

8 4 Matt Ryan QB SlickRick23

8 5 Jordy Nelson WR Felonious Assault 1

8 6 Torrey Smith WR The Maestro

8 7 Tom Brady QB San Carlos 4

8 8 Mike Wallace WR Sledgehammer

8 9 Chris Ivory RB BrockmanBlitz

8 10 Josh Gordon WR Team paul

Comments: Still looking for solid RB depth, I like Williams in this spot. He has been a pain, but it looks like they will go more conventional this year, and he looked very good the evening this draft took place (I probably took him 15 minutes before he started getting carries). Good value here for Ryan, and I seriously considered Anquan Boldin. Josh Gordon could be a good value if he’s out of trouble.

9 1 Jonathan Stewart RB Team paul

9 2 Greg Jennings WR BrockmanBlitz

9 3 Tony Romo QB Sledgehammer

9 4 Golden Tate WR San Carlos 4

9 5 BenJarvus Green-Ellis RB The Maestro

9 6 Russell Wilson QB Felonious Assault 1

9 7 Cecil Shorts WR SlickRick23

9 8 Miles Austin WR Guru’s Guru

9 9 Kyle Rudolph TE BobbyG

9 10 Jermichael Finley TE Team Hansen

Comments: In a smaller league, you’re looking for impact players, and I felt Finley was a worthy risk about 100 picks into the draft. He definitely has a chance to be very impactful, and his QB continues to heap praise on him this summer, most recently Friday 8/16. I liked the Golden Tate pick here.

10 1 Bryce Brown RB Team Hansen

10 2 Kendall Wright WR BobbyG

10 3 Andre Brown RB Guru’s Guru

10 4 Ronnie Hillman RB SlickRick23

10 5 DeAndre Hopkins WR Felonious Assault 1

10 6 LaMichael James RB The Maestro

10 7 Emmanuel Sanders WR San Carlos 4

10 8 Kenny Britt WR Sledgehammer

10 9 Kenbrell Thompkins WR BrockmanBlitz

10 10 Colin Kaepernick QB Team paul

Comments: I know he’s still behind Chris Polk, who looked solid in the second preseason game (Brown sat out with a minor injury). But ultimately, I’m betting that the cream rises to the top, and Brown is more talented than Polk. He’s a McCoy handcuff (hopefully) and also a player who might be worth using in a pinch. This was way too high for Kenbrell Thompkins, who did nothing on 8/16, the night after this draft. He could still surprise, for sure, but that’s still too early. Solid value here for Colin Kaepernick.

11 1 Robert Griffin III QB Team paul

11 2 Rashard Mendenhall RB BrockmanBlitz

11 3 Cordarrelle Patterson WR Sledgehammer

11 4 Lance Moore WR San Carlos 4

11 5 Vick Ballard RB The Maestro

11 6 Alshon Jeffery WR Felonious Assault 1

11 7 Greg Olsen TE SlickRick23

11 8 Fred Davis TE Guru’s Guru

11 9 Sidney Rice WR BobbyG

11 10 Vincent Brown WR Team Hansen

Comments: The vibes are shaky in SD, but Brown continues to look like a player ready to emerge, and he should be the #1 WR for this team Week One. I wish things were better around him and that he was more durable, so he’s not a perfect breakout candidate. But he’s still a good one, I believe. Lance Moore was a solid value I would have taken here. This was too early for Cordarrelle Patterson.

12 1 Pierre Thomas RB Team Hansen

12 2 Danny Woodhead RB BobbyG

12 3 Fred Jackson RB Guru’s Guru

12 4 Bernard Pierce RB SlickRick23

12 5 Mike Williams WR Felonious Assault 1

12 6 Michael Bush RB The Maestro

12 7 Jared Cook TE San Carlos 4

12 8 Justin Blackmon WR Sledgehammer

12 9 Michael Floyd WR BrockmanBlitz

12 10 Rod Streater WR Team paul

Comments: Looking for a viable RB for depth that I could count on if needed, and Thomas fit the bill well. I considered Danny Woodhead, whom I do like, but I picked Thomas on the Saints, since there are shaky vibes with the Chargers. Jared Cook was a good pick here, and Mike Williams a value.

13 1 Martellus Bennett TE Team paul

13 2 Robert Woods WR BrockmanBlitz

13 3 Brandon Myers TE Sledgehammer

13 4 Rueben Randle WR San Carlos 4

13 5 Coby Fleener TE The Maestro

13 6 Bilal Powell RB Felonious Assault 1

13 7 Eli Manning QB SlickRick23

13 8 Jordan Cameron TE Guru’s Guru

13 9 Brian Hartline WR BobbyG

13 10 Antonio Gates TE Team Hansen

Comments: When you take Finley as your #1 TE, you need another good option, and Gates was perfect. The vibes are shaky here, but Gates looked good in the second preseason game and it looks like he has another productive year in his legs. This was a little early for some players like Robert Woods and Bilal Powell. But it was not too early for Reuben Randle, Coby Fleener, and especially Jordan Cameron.

14 1 Isaiah Pead RB Team Hansen

14 2 Brandon Pettigrew TE BobbyG

14 3 Seattle DST DST Guru’s Guru

14 4 Ryan Broyles WR SlickRick23

14 5 Sam Bradford QB Felonious Assault 1

14 6 San Francisco DST DST The Maestro

14 7 Denver DST DST San Carlos 4

14 8 Chicago DST DST Sledgehammer

14 9 Jay Cutler QB BrockmanBlitz

14 10 Mohamed Sanu WR Team paul

Comments: The only reason I took Pead here (not that this is very high) is because I have Richardson. If he’s out or ineffective, Pead will get a major chance for the Rams.

15 1 Denard Robinson RB Team paul

15 2 Aaron Dobson WR BrockmanBlitz

15 3 Owen Daniels TE Sledgehammer

15 4 Jacquizz Rodgers RB San Carlos 4

15 5 Zac Stacy RB The Maestro

15 6 Houston DST DST Felonious Assault 1

15 7 Cincinnati DST DST SlickRick23

15 8 Tyler Eifert TE Guru’s Guru

15 9 Ace Sanders WR BobbyG

15 10 New England DST DST Team Hansen

Comments: It’s getting late, might as well get a defense that has a chance to be impactful, but I can’t say I’m totally sold on NE defense given their potential problems on offense. This is a defense that thrives on turnovers, and it’s helpful when they have a great offense. Ace Sanders was a sneaky pick this late and Tyler Eifert was worth a shot.

16 1 Joique Bell RB Team Hansen

16 2 Johnathan Franklin RB BobbyG

16 3 Julian Edelman WR Guru’s Guru

16 4 Malcom Floyd WR SlickRick23

16 5 Rob Housler TE Felonious Assault 1

16 6 Andy Dalton QB The Maestro

16 7 Jonathan Dwyer RB San Carlos 4

16 8 Roy Helu RB Sledgehammer

16 9 Brandon LaFell WR BrockmanBlitz

16 10 Dustin Keller TE Team paul

Comments: This is almost like a league where you draft and don’t touch the roster, with only 3 WW moves allowed, so I like Bell as a good stash-and-hope option. If Reggie Bush is out, Bell should get catches.

17 1 Michael Vick QB Team paul

17 2 Donnie Avery WR BrockmanBlitz

17 3 Arizona DST DST Sledgehammer

17 4 Knile Davis RB San Carlos 4

17 5 Jermaine Gresham TE The Maestro

17 6 Christine Michael RB Felonious Assault 1

17 7 Dwayne Allen TE SlickRick23

17 8 Chris Ogbonnaya RB Guru’s Guru

17 9 Michael Crabtree WR BobbyG

17 10 Stepfan Taylor RB Team Hansen

Comments: This was a bit of a reach, but then again we’re talking the 17th round. I do think there’s a chance that Taylor is a factor here, given the injury issues with the two RBs ahead of him. Chris Ogbonnaya could catch some passes here at FB, but this was too early for him. Michael Crabtree actually made sense here given the deep roster.

18 1 Carson Palmer QB Team Hansen

18 2 Denarius Moore WR BobbyG

18 3 Mikel Leshoure RB Guru’s Guru

18 4 Marcel Reece RB SlickRick23

18 5 Jeremy Kerley WR Felonious Assault 1

18 6 St. Louis DST DST The Maestro

18 7 Baltimore DST DST San Carlos 4

18 8 Percy Harvin WR Sledgehammer

18 9 Green Bay DST DST BrockmanBlitz

18 10 Andre Roberts WR Team paul

Comments: Brees is very durable, but with only 3 WW moves allowed, I had to get a good backup, and I think Palmer is. Mikel Leshoure, Percy Harvin, Denarius Moore, and Jeremy Kerley were worth a shot here. I’m being told that Moore is taking things a little more seriously this year. Of course, the Raiders are a mess.

19 1 Zach Sudfeld TE Team paul

19 2 Rashad Jennings RB BrockmanBlitz

19 3 Ben Roethlisberger QB Sledgehammer

19 4 Greg Little WR San Carlos 4

19 5 Tampa Bay DST DST The Maestro

19 6 Minnesota DST DST Felonious Assault 1

19 7 EJ Manuel QB SlickRick23

19 8 Matt Schaub QB Guru’s Guru

19 9 Ryan Tannehill QB BobbyG

19 10 Kendall Hunter RB Team Hansen

Comments: This pick was made mainly because I have Gore. The 49ers are taking things slowly with Hunter, but I’m told he will still be the #2 RB if healthy. I’m ready to move Zach Sudfeld up after watching their 8/16 game today (8/17). He had a nice 2-point conversion from Tom Brady in addition to scoring. I would not have taken E.J. Manuel over Ryan Tannehill, but both were good values here.

20 1 Dexter McCluster WR Team Hansen

20 2 Robert Turbin RB BobbyG

20 3 Knowshon Moreno RB Guru’s Guru

20 4 Lance Dunbar RB SlickRick23

20 5 Josh Freeman QB Felonious Assault 1

20 6 Darrius Heyward-Bey WR The Maestro

20 7 Mike Gillislee RB San Carlos 4

20 8 Shonn Greene RB Sledgehammer

20 9 LeGarrette Blount RB BrockmanBlitz

20 10 Greg Zuerlein K Team paul

Comments: I’m a little light at WR, and in McCluster I could get a 60-catch guy.

21 1 Cleveland DST DST Team paul

21 2 Julius Thomas TE BrockmanBlitz

21 3 Blair Walsh K Sledgehammer

21 4 Phil Dawson K San Carlos 4

21 5 Matt Bryant K The Maestro

21 6 Sebastian Janikowski K Felonious Assault 1

21 7 Kai Forbath K SlickRick23

21 8 LaRod Stephens-Howling RB Guru’s Guru

21 9 Indianapolis DST DST BobbyG

21 10 Davone Bess WR Team Hansen

Comments: Still looking for catches, we’re told that the Browns are very pleased with Bess, who should also get 60 catches.

22 1 Stephen Gostkowski K Team Hansen

22 2 Miami DST DST BobbyG

22 3 Andrew Hawkins WR Guru’s Guru

22 4 Nate Washington WR SlickRick23

22 5 Dion Lewis RB Felonious Assault 1

22 6 Santana Moss WR The Maestro

22 7 Damaris Johnson WR San Carlos 4

22 8 Keenan Allen WR Sledgehammer

22 9 Daniel Thomas RB BrockmanBlitz

22 10 Ryan Williams RB Team paul

Comments: My guy Phil Dawson (who hit two 50+ yard FGs on 8/16) was gone, so I settled on Gostkowski. Of course, he could go off this year given their issues at receiver, as it looks like they will still move the ball.

23 1 New York (N) DST DST Team paul

23 2 Matt Prater K BrockmanBlitz

23 3 Garrett Hartley K Sledgehammer

23 4 Justin Forsett RB San Carlos 4

23 5 Justin Tucker K The Maestro

23 6 Dan Bailey K Felonious Assault 1

23 7 Atlanta DST DST SlickRick23

23 8 Alex Smith QB Guru’s Guru

23 9 Joseph Randle RB BobbyG

23 10 Benjamin Watson TE Team Hansen

Comments: I love Watson as a deep, deep sleeper. He’s been on the field a lot this preseason, and he has upside if Jimmy Graham is out. He’s my #3 TE, so I liked him even more in this league with deep roster and minimal WW opportunities.

24 1 Brian Quick WR Team Hansen

24 2 Randy Bullock K BobbyG

24 3 Brandon Stokley WR Guru’s Guru

24 4 Lawrence Tynes K SlickRick23

24 5 Dallas DST DST Felonious Assault 1

24 6 Carolina DST DST The Maestro

24 7 Ryan Succop K San Carlos 4

24 8 Joe Flacco QB Sledgehammer

24 9 Detroit DST DST BrockmanBlitz

24 10 Latavius Murray RB Team paul

Comments: At this point, this is all about upside. Quick has been a disappointment, but he’s still ideally a starter here. If he shows he’s worthy, which is a big question, he could still start.

25 1 Shayne Graham K Team paul

25 2 Riley Cooper WR BrockmanBlitz

25 3 Toby Gerhart RB Sledgehammer

25 4 Brandon Weeden QB San Carlos 4

25 5 Oakland DST DST The Maestro

25 6 DuJuan Harris RB Felonious Assault 1

25 7 David Akers K SlickRick23

25 8 Pittsburgh DST DST Guru’s Guru

25 9 San Diego DST DST BobbyG

25 10 Brandon Lloyd WR Team Hansen

Comments: Still looking for WR help, figured an unemployed Lloyd had about as much potential as the remaining WRs. Brandon Weeden was a steal here.

26 1 Stephen Hill WR Team Hansen

26 2 Alex Henery K BobbyG

26 3 Steven Hauschka K Guru’s Guru

26 4 Danario Alexander WR SlickRick23

26 5 Marcedes Lewis TE Felonious Assault 1

26 6 Armanti Edwards WR The Maestro

26 7 Jon Baldwin WR San Carlos 4

26 8 Markus Wheaton WR Sledgehammer

26 9 Austin Collie WR BrockmanBlitz

26 10 Andre Ellington RB Team paul

Comments: At least Hill will start with the Jets, and he has talent. Markus Wheaton should have been my pick, though. I got lazy in the 26th round and didn’t seek him out. Wheaton could start at some point this year and might quickly help the Steelers forget about Mike Wallace.

Projected starting lineup (PPR, 6 points for all TDs):

QB: Drew Brees

RB: LeSean McCoy

RB: Frank Gore

WR: A.J. Green

WR: Antonio Brown

WR: Hakeem Nicks

Flex: Daryl Richardson/DeAngelo Williams

TE: Jermichael Finley

PK: Stephen Gostkowski

DT: New England

This squad may not be incredible, but it’s a pretty good team with upside, and in this format I like my depth.

What is it with Guru’s fetish for San Carlos 4?

Anyone think Brockman has a shot?

One thought on “Deuce Commissioner Brockman In League With John Hansen”
  1. Alright, settle down. It’s a full PPR league and JC will catch 50 passes plus if healthy all season….it’s Andy Reid, it’s Alex Smith, what am I missing? That was one of my better picks. And as for Hansen, he can suck it. I got both of the rookie NE WRs. I know somebody will be catching TDs after Danny “Glass Body” Amendola gets his tampon pulled out. That guy has as much of a chance of playing 16 games as I do.
