As a league we will likely find 100 or more players we deem worth keeping before next year’s auction. The Rookie Draft is designed to pump new talent cheaply into the league favoring the poorer performers from the year before. Free agency and waivers are designed to favor those trailing DURING each season. Different draft strategies have borne the fruit of late selections at inexcusably low contract values.

One of these avenues leads us to prize contract players. Since our players don’t hold out because of bad contracts these are our real franchise players. In a 12 team league I find these to be the 12 most desirable 2011 contracts for the 2012 season.

5) LeSean McCoy $12, “O”
6) Matthew Stafford $4, “O”

Honorable mention to Jordy Nelson $4 L1, Steve Smith $5 L1, Demarco Murray $1 S1 and Kenny Britt $3 L2

Defenses were not considered simply because their personnel changes every year nor were players whose contract periods will expire at the end of this season. Discussion?

Most Underperforming Contracts

QB Phillip Rivers $23 L3 Head case? $1 less than the highest QB salary and barely the 12th best scoring QB. Too many INT’s

RB Felix Jones $16 L4 Injuries as well as poor performance have helped lead to the Demarco Murray era
RB DeAngelo Williams $13 L1 Probably just a natural decline for the 28 yr old

RB Rashard Mendenhall $21 L1 Soooo many O line injuries…..likely to have a bounce back season next year
RB Chris Johnson $21 L1 Much publicized hold out and excruciating season for every fantasy owner that held CJ

WR Anquan Boldin $18 L2 Mostly a casualty of Flacco’s disappointing play
WR Andre Johnson $25 L4 Only played in 4.5 games, but still none were huge fantasy games, crazy lost time for a hamstring and now no QB
WR DeSean Jackson $14 L1 We all moaned that Brandon got him too cheaply at the auction…..he’s been moaning most of this season

TE Antonio Gates $11 L1 Still very capable, but age, injuries and Rivers (as well as the emergence of TE’s throughout he league) make this contract too big
TE Vernon Davis $6 L7 Not a terrrrrrible season and $6 isn’t going to handicap a roster too much, but the Franchise tag makes this contract burdensome

DEF Philadelphia Eagles $8 L1 2nd highest DEF salary, 16th highest scoring
