An uber competitive south division will ensure a fight for four playoff spots this week. Here’s where things stand now, and each scenario that could play out to create final seedings.

Currently:

1. Morons (11-1)
2. Russians (7-5) [Holds highest total points tiebreaker]
3. Smoot (6-6)
4. Quimby (7-5) [H2H over Qtopia]
5. Qtopia (7-5)
6. Revenge (6-6) [H2H over Qutane and Quickly]
7. Qutane (6-6) [H2H over Quickly]
8. Quickly (6-6)
9. Raging (5-7) [H2H over Goonie]
10. Goonie (5-7)
11. Mexiq (3-9) [H2H over Toon]
12. Al Toon (3-9)

The match ups this week in the south division will determine everything:

Russians vs. Quickly
Quimby vs. Qtopia

*Revenge also goes against Qutane….but this match up has less bearing since either team will make it to 7-6

There are 4 possible outcomes – here’s the seedings for each depending on which happens:

If Russians loses, and Quimby wins:

Quickly 7-6 (4-2)
Quimby 8-5
Qtopia 7-6 (3-3)
Cox/Qutane 7-6
Russians 7-6 (3-3)

-Quimby wins division
-Quickly takes the three way tie in the south with his best divisional record
-The remaining tie between Qtopia and Russians is taken by Russians via best total points UNLESS Qtopia outscores Russians by 85+ points this week.
-With the south teams seeded, the winner of Cox/Qutane is seeded by first comparing to the highest seeded south team
-Qutane and Cox hold H2H victories over Quickly, so they would seed ahead.

Result:

Morons
Quimby
Smoot
Cox/Qutane
Quickly
Russians

Qtopia

If Russians loses, and Qtopia wins

Quickly 7-6 (4-2)
Quimby 7-6 (1-5)
Qtopia 8-5 (4-2)
Russians 7-6 (3-3)
Cox/Qutane 7-6

-Qtopia wins divison
-Quickly takes the three way tie in the south with his best divisional record
-The remaining tie between Quimby and Russians is taken by Russians via better H2H record
-With the south teams seeded, the winner of Cox/Qutane is seeded by first comparing to the highest seeded south team
-Qutane and Cox hold H2H victories over Quickly, so they would seed ahead.

Result:
Morons
Qtopia
Smoot
Cox/Qutane
Quickly
Russians

Quimby

If Russians wins, Qtopia wins

Qtopia 8-5
Russians 8-5
Quimby 7-6
Quickly 6-7
Cox/Qutane 7-6

-The remaining tie between Qtopia and Russians is taken by Russians via best total points UNLESS Qtopia outscores Russians by 85+ points this week.
-Therefore, Russians win division
-Quimby takes tie breaker between Cox/Qutane holding H2H victories over both.

Russians
Smoot
Qtopia
Quimby
Cox/Qutane

If Russians wins, Quimby wins

Quimby 8-5
Russians 8-5
Qtopia 7-6
Quickly 6-7
Cox/Qutane 7-6

-The tie breaker between Russians and Quimby is taken by Russians via better H2H record

7 thoughts on “QFL3 Playoff Scenarios: It’s Complicated”
  1. It looks like scenario 1 of 4 is going to happen. But since I beat both Qutane and Cox in non-Division play, doesnt that mean I still make the playoffs since if I lose I’ll have the same record as the Qutane/Cox game winner?

  2. Unfortunately it does not. The way to break the four way tie is to seed everybody in the south division first, and then take the north division team and seed them against the highest seeded team out of the south. Quickly Eliminated has been strong in the division, but weak versus everybody else. So, he takes the highest seed in the division, but loses right away on H2H match up when Cox is brought in from the north. Since Cox wins that tie breaker he is seeded ahead at #4.

This might be a better description from Paul:

Just glancing at QFL III’s standings, if Quickly Eliminated wins in Week 13, it looks like your league definitely will have a 7-6 team miss the playoffs. Notwithstanding, there definitely will be at least one 7-6 non-divisional tie to break. Remember to break the ties in the QFC South first. A team can never be seeded higher than a division rival who finishes higher in the division. So you would break all the tiebreakers in the QFC South first. The highest ranked 7-6 team in the QFC South would then be compared to the winner of the QUTANE/REVENGE OF THE COX Week 13 game. If the QFC North team wins this tiebreak, then the rankings are set. If not, you would compare the 7-6 QFC North to the second QFC South team, and so on, until you have all your seeds.

  3. Gotcha, so basically it makes for a competitive regular season and a not so competitive post season.

At the very least it means I will mop up the consolation bracket since essentially I’m a number 3 or 4 ranked team based on wins/points/heads-up victories, but will be playing as number 7 seeded team.

Sorry to all those teams at the bottom that were hoping for a number one draft pick next year.

  4. Doesn’t QTopia seed higher than Quickly Eliminated due to a 2-0 record against him this season? Looks like head-to-head is the first tiebreaker than division record. If the scores hold, then they’ll both be 7-6. Qtopia beat QE in weeks 2 and 12. Shouldn’t division record only matter if they split the regular season?

    (Sorry Tom, if I’m right)

Article 1 Tie breakers for standings are as follows:
    i) Head To Head
    ii) Division Record
    iii) Total Points
    iv) Highest Weekly Total
    v) Coin Flip

Note c): Division Record only pertains to opponents in the same division.

  5. Or maybe that’s all wrong

Since all three teams would be 7-6 and Qtopia swept QE 2-0, but split with the Russians who were swept by QE.

However it works, it looks like someone is gonna get screwed for being in a power conference.

  6. I’m the first to admit that I could be wrong with this and another set of eyes to go through it is great…we’ve had playoff seeding flub ups before in our league…so this is all good to hash out. It’s never been this close for us.

The use of H2H records to break this tie between Quickly, Russians, and Qtopia is inconclusive for the reasons you started to work through Eric. No one team went 2-0 against the other two teams, so it’s a muddled mess. The fact that one of the three teams is 1-1 against another blows that use as a tiebreaker away.

There’s no way around one 7-6 team not making the playoffs.
