The Sacramento Bee is reporting that 49ers’ coach…

Mike Singletary is desperately seeking a return man [like] Percy Harvin and Reggie Bush, [who] could be moved around the field like chess pieces.

The paper goes on to predict the “chess piece” could be a rookie, like #1 pre-draft rated fantasy football rookie, CJ Spiller.

If the 49ers are bold, they might take running back C.J. Spiller of Clemson in the first round. Or they could wait and nab Cal’s Jahvid Best, USC’s Joe McKnight or Mississippi’s Dexter McCluster.

Should any of these predictions come true, it would significantly reduce the fantasy football value of that player (at least for a few years) due to the presence of stud Frank Gore and 2009 third round pick, Glen Coffee. The type of “chess piece” NFL player they are describing tends not to translate into consistent fantasy points, although he could provide a big boost to San Fran D.

Situations like this are why the 2010 rookie ranking released by QBallers last week is considered an early look at the class. Most of a rookie’s fantasy football value depends on who drafts them. That’s why we’ll continue to keep tabs on this situation and others as they develop ahead of the 2010 NFL Draft April 22-24.
